Godox V480S Review: Best Compact Flash

Honest Godox V480S review after shooting thousands of wedding photos. Is this $150 flash powerful enough for dance floors and receptions? Real-world testing.

Is the Godox V480S Good Enough for Wedding Photography?

I’ve been testing the Godox V480S for Sony as my main flash for the last couple of months. Shot a few weddings with it, plus an epic party full of wedding photographers at a European conference. Honestly? I didn’t expect this $150 flash to perform this well. It’s not perfect — no flash is — but after shooting a couple thousand photos with it, I’ve got some real thoughts to share. If you’re looking for a compact, lightweight flash for dance floor work that won’t destroy your wrist or your wallet, keep reading. This Godox V480S review covers everything you need to know.

What You Get with the Godox V480S

Let me start with what’s in the box and what this flash actually is. The V480S is basically the smaller brother of the Godox V100. It’s got a touchscreen interface that’s super easy to use — one dial on the back, three buttons, and you’re good to go. Unlike the V100, this one has a standard rectangular head (not circular) that rotates in every direction. There’s a built-in diffuser for wider beam angles and an old-school white bounce card too.

In the box you get:

  • A nice protective pouch
  • Additional diffuser
  • USB-C charger and cable
  • Charging brick (yes, actually included — looking at you, Apple)
  • A Godox mascot (didn’t even know they had one)

The USB-C charging is clutch. You charge the battery directly with the cable. No removing batteries, no fumbling around. Just plug it in. For a $150 product to include a charging brick when a $1000 iPhone doesn’t? That’s wild. Build quality is plastic but doesn’t feel cheap. The head is tight — won’t accidentally move when it’s hanging off your camera strap, which matters when you’re running around a wedding.

Real Wedding Performance: Dance Floor Testing

Here’s where this flash really shines — dance floor work. I’ve wanted a smaller flash for receptions for ages. You don’t always need a massive powerful unit, and the V480S is the perfect size compared to the big boys like the Godox V100 or Profoto A10. It’s literally 50% lighter, which takes serious strain off your wrist when you’re shooting for hours.

I tested this hard at Nine Dots Gathering in Manchester — a wedding photography conference with about 120 people. Shot the party at half power most of the night. The flash held up insanely well. My camera battery died before the flash battery did. After 500 photos at around half power, the battery didn’t even lose a bar. At half power, the recycle time is instant. You can shoot, shoot, shoot without waiting.

For dance floor flash photography, this thing is perfect. Direct flash at parties? No problem. The key is you don’t need to crank the power up — shooting at half power gives you everything you need for most reception lighting situations.

The Downsides You Need to Know

Okay, real talk. This flash isn’t perfect. There are three things that genuinely bug me:

1. The touchscreen unlocks too easily. Even when locked, if you bump the camera on your hip (which happens constantly at weddings), it tends to unlock or change settings. Super annoying. Haven’t found a workaround yet.

2. Sleep mode wake-up is slow. When the flash goes to sleep and you haven’t used it for a bit, you need to click the shutter 3-4 times before it fires. By the fourth or fifth shot, finally you get a photo with flash. Frustrating when you’re trying to catch a moment.

3. That back dial is terrible. It’s hard to use. I much prefer using the touchscreen to adjust power. This is also my complaint with the V100. Compared to Profoto flashes (which feel like an iPod — big rubber dial, super satisfying), the Godox dial experience just isn’t there. Small thing, but it matters when you’re working fast.

Power Limitations: When This Flash Struggles

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room — power. This flash is perfect at half power. But shooting at max power takes forever to recycle — close to 2 seconds. Watch: at half power you can fire instantly. At full power? Wait… wait… wait… flash. Wait… wait… flash. Anything up to 7-8 on the power scale is basically instant. But full power? You’re waiting.

For comparison, half power on the V480S is only about 30% of the power of the V100. The V100 doesn’t have this recycle problem at all — it’s just way more powerful. So if you’re doing bounce flash in a venue with tall ceilings, or trying to overpower sun outdoors, this flash will struggle. You’ll be waiting for recycles and burning through batteries.

That’s why I kept my V100 in my backpack as backup during weddings. For the dance floor stuff I shot? Perfectly fine. For most wedding moments? Perfectly fine. But you need to understand its limits. This is a compact flash for a reason — it trades power for portability.

Should You Buy the Godox V480S for Weddings?

100% yes — if you understand what you’re getting.

This flash is amazing if you:

  • Want a smaller, lighter flash for dance floors
  • Already have a more powerful flash as your main unit
  • Shoot a lot of direct flash at half power or below
  • Need a solid backup flash that won’t break the bank

For only $150, this is literally an amazing deal. All the new stuff from Godox is spot-on. The quality and reliability is way better than the old Godox flashes I used years ago (those were really bad). These new ones are actually really good.

Would I recommend this as your only flash for weddings? Honestly, probably not. If you need just one flash for everything, get something more powerful. You need headroom for outdoor shots, overpowering sun, bouncing in tall venues — situations where this flash will make you wait for recycles and drain batteries fast.

But as a second unit? As a backup? As your go-to for moments when you don’t need power but need lighter gear? It’s perfection. The weight savings alone make it worth having in your kit.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Godox V480S

Is the Godox V480S powerful enough for wedding photography?

Yes, but with limitations. It’s perfect for dance floor work and direct flash at half power. You’ll get instant recycle times and great battery life. However, it struggles at full power (nearly 2-second recycle time) and isn’t ideal for bouncing in large venues or overpowering sun outdoors. It works best as a secondary flash or for specific uses rather than as your only wedding flash.

How does the Godox V480S compare to the V100?

The V480S is smaller and lighter (50% the weight) with a rectangular head instead of circular. Half power on the V480S equals about 30% of the V100’s power. The V100 has much faster recycle times at full power and more overall power for demanding situations. The V480S costs $150 vs around $200+ for the V100. Choose V480S for portability and dance floors, V100 for versatility and power.

What’s the battery life like on the Godox V480S at weddings?

Battery life is surprisingly excellent at half power. During real wedding testing, the flash shot 500+ photos at half power without losing a single battery bar. The camera battery died first. However, shooting at full power will drain the battery much faster due to the increased power draw. For typical dance floor work at moderate power levels, you can shoot most of a reception on one charge.

Does the Godox V480S work with magnetic modifiers and softboxes?

No, the V480S has a rectangular head without magnetic attachment capability. It won’t work with popular round-head magnetic modifiers like MagMod or certain Profoto accessories. However, there are softboxes on the market designed specifically for rectangular flash heads that will fit the V480S. If you already own magnetic round-head modifiers, you’ll need to purchase different accessories for this flash.

Final Thoughts on the Godox V480S

After shooting thousands of photos with the Godox V480S at real weddings and events, I’m genuinely impressed. For $150, you’re getting a reliable, lightweight flash that absolutely crushes it for dance floor photography and direct flash work. Yes, it has limitations at full power. Yes, the touchscreen unlocks too easily and the dial isn’t great. But for what it is — a compact, budget-friendly wedding flash — it delivers. If you need a second flash or want something lighter for receptions, grab it. Just know its limits and you’ll love it. Want to see more?
